The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:30 p.m. this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Stratton, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bolduc, Callbeck, Carstairs, Cools, De Bané, P.C., DeWare, Fraser, Lavoie-Roux, Mahovlich, Moore and Stratton (11).
In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, December 9, 1998, the committee continued its examination of Bill C-41, to amend the Royal Canadian Mint Act and the Currency Act.
APPEARING:
The Honourable Alfonso Gagliano, P.C., M.P., Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister responsible for the Royal Canadian Mint.

The Honourable Alfonso Gagliano made a statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, February 10, 1999, the committee began its examination of Bill C-43, to establish the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency and to amend and repeal other Acts as a consequence.

The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal made a statement and with the witnesses from Revenue Canada answered questions.

It was agreed -- That the committee's report on retention and compensation issues in the public service be tabled in the Senate.
It was agreed -- that, as part of its examination of the main estimates, the committee will undertake a study on Canada's emergency and disaster preparedness.
At 7:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
