The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 9:00 a.m. in Room 505 Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Gerald Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Butts, Comeau, Cook, Mahovlich, Meighen, and Stewart (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

APPEARING:

The Honourable David Anderson, P.C., M.P., Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

Mr. Larry Murray, Associate Deputy Minister;

Ms Liseanne Forand, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy;

Mr. William Elliott, Deputy Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard;

Mr. William Doubleday, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Science;

Mr. Jacque, Robichaud, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries Management;

Mr. David Bickerton, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services;

Ms Mickaela Huard, Director, Habitat Policy and Program Development.

Pursuant to Order of Reference adopted on Thursday March 4, 1999, the committee commenced its examination of the expenditures set out in Fisheries and Oceans Votes 1, 5 and 10 of the Estimates for the Fiscal year ending March 31, 2000.

The Chair made a special presentation to Honourable Senator Butts in recognition of her contribution to the committee.

Mr. Murray made a statement and, together with Ms Liseanne Forand, Mr. William Elliott, Mr. William Doubleday, Mr. David Bickerton and Ms Mickaela Huard, answered questions.

At 9:47 a.m., the Honourable Senator Butts assumed the Chair.

At 10:40 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
