The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 4:05 p.m. in Room 356-S of the Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable John B. Stewart, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bolduc, Corbin, Di Nino, Doody, Stewart, Stollery and Whelan (8).
Also present: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mr. Peter Berg, Economics Division.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
WITNESSES:
From the Centre for Trade Policy and Law, Carleton University:
Michael Hart, Professor.
From the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs:
Martin Rudner, Professor.
From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade:
John M. Curtis, Senior Policy Adviser and Coordinator, Trade and Economic Policy Branch.
The committee began proceedings on the following order of reference: That the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs be authorized to examine and report on the growing importance of the Asia-Pacific Region for Canada.
Messrs Hart, Rudner and Curtis each made a presentation and took questions from committee members.
At 5:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
