The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 4:25 p.m. in Room 160-S of the Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honorable John B. Stewart, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bolduc, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Grafstein, Losier-Cool, Stewart and Stollery (8).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mr. Peter Berg, Economics Division.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Mr. Jean-Marc Déry, Chief, Tax Treaties, Tax Legislation Division;
Mr. Daniel MacIntosh, Director, Tax Legislation Division
The committee commenced its study of Bill S-16, an Act to implement an agreement between Canada and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, an agreement between Canada and the Republic of Croatia and a convention between Canada and the Republic of Chile, for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.
M. Déry made a presentation and, with the assistance of Mr. MacIntosh, answered the questions of committee members.
Committee members proceeded to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill S-16.
It was agreed, -- That clauses 2 through 7 shall carry.
It was agreed, -- That clauses 8 through 13 shall carry.
It was agreed, -- That clauses 14 through 19 shall carry.
It was agreed, -- That schedules 1 through 3 shall carry.
It was agreed, -- That the short title shall carry.
It was agreed, -- That the title shall carry.
It was agreed, -- That Bill S-16 shall be reported without amendment but with comment.
Senator Stollery moved, -- That the Chairman of the committee report Bill S-16 to the Senate.
The motion was carried unanimously.
At 5:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
