The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, met this day in Room 257, East Block, at 10:52 a.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Lorna Milne, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Cogger, Gigantès, Jessiman, Lewis, Milne, Moore, Pépin, Watt. (9)
In attendance: Kate Dunkley, Research Officer, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 2, 1997, the Committee commenced its consideration of Bill S-7, An Act to amend the Criminal Code to prohibit coercion in medical procedures that offend a person's religion or belief that human life is inviolable.
WITNESSES:
Honourable Senator Stanley Haidasz, Sponsor of the bill.
Gary Knight, Researcher for Senator Haidasz.
The Chairman made an opening statement.
Senator Haidasz made a statement and, together with Mr. Knight, answered questions.
Senator Milne stated that once all witnesses have been heard on Bill S-7, Senator Haidasz will be invited back to close the hearings.
It was agreed -- That if the Senate does not sit the week of March 9, 1998, efforts be made to reschedule the witness for the meeting of March 11 to March 12, so that only one meeting be necessary.
At 12:36 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
