The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 11:30 a.m. this day in Room 256-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Bacon, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Bacon, Bryden, Forrestall, Poulin, Roberge, and Spivak (7).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Oliver.

In attendance: Martin Brennan, Special Advisor to the committee.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board:

Jim Hall, Chairman;

Barry Sweedler; Director, Office of Safety Recommendations and Accomplishments;

Debra Smith, Chief Assistant to the Chairman.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 21,1997, the committee continued its consideration of Bill S-2, an Act to amend the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act and to make a consequential amendment to another Act (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, October 23, 1997 for full text of Order of Reference).

The witnesses each made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
