The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 10:37 a.m., in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Poulin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Callbeck, Fitzpatrick, Forrestall, Joyal, P.C., Kinsella, Lynch-Staunton, Maheu, Perrault, P.C., Poulin, Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis-de-Kent), Rompkey, P.C. (12).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, DeWare, Hays and Tkachuk (4).

In Attendance: Terrence J. Thomas, Research Officer, Economics Division, Research Branch, Library of Parliament and Till Heyde, Legislative Clerk, Committees and Private Legislation Directorate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 25, 1999, the committee proceeded to consider Bill C-55, An Act respecting Advertising services supplied by foreign periodical publishers. (See Issue No. 22, Tuesday, April 13, 1999 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

Ms. Jamie Cameron made a statement and answered questions.

As a panel, the witnesses from the Association of Canadian Advertisers (ACA) and from the Institute of Canadian Advertising (ICA) made statements and answered questions.

It was agreed -- That the brief of the Association of Canadian Advertisers, the Institute of Canadian Advertisers, and the Canadian Media Director's Council be filed as an exhibit.

As a panel, the witnesses from the Canadian Magazine Publishers Association made statements and answered questions.

At 13:55 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
