The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 11:07 a.m., in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Poulin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Forrestall, Grafstein, Johnson, Maheu, Poulin, Roberge, Robichaud, P.C. (L'Acadie-Acadia), Rompkey, P.C. and Spivak (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Kenny (1).

In attendance: Terrence J. Thomas, Research Officer, Economics Division, Research Branch, Library of Parliament and Till Heyde, Legislative Clerk, Committees and Private Legislation Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation:

Guyliane Saucier, Chair of the Board of Directors;

Perrin Beatty, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 15, 1999, the committee proceeded to hear the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in order to receive a briefing on their strategic plan.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 12:52 p.m., the committee proceeded in camera to consider a draft final report from the Subcommittee on Communications on Canada's international competitive position in communications generally, including a review of the economic, social and cultural importance of communications in Canada.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Spivak, - That the draft report, subject to changes to be approved by the Chair and the Deputy Chair of the Subcommittee on Communications, be adopted as the report of the committee and that the Chair be authorized to table it, pursuant to the order adopted by the Senate on March 23, 1999.

The motion was adopted.

At 12:58 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
