The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 5:38 p.m. to organize the activities of the committee.

Ms Cathy Piccinin, Clerk of the Committee: Honourable senators, I see a quorum. It is my duty, as Clerk of the Committee, to preside over the election of the chairman, and I am prepared to receive motions to that effect.
Senator Carstairs: I move that the Honourable Senator Kirby be chairman of this committee.
The Clerk: It is moved by the Honourable Senator Carstairs that the Honourable Senator Kirby be chairman of this committee.
Is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
Ms Piccinin: I declare the motion carried.
I invite the Honourable Senator Kirby to take the chair.
Senator Michael Kirby (Chairman) in the Chair.
The Chairman: The next item on the agenda, honourable senators, is the election of a deputy chairman of the committee.
Senator Carstairs: I move that the Honourable Senator LeBreton be deputy chairman of this committee.
The Chairman: It is moved by the Honourable Senator Carstairs that the Honourable Senator LeBreton be deputy chairman of the committee.
Is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
The Chairman: I declare the motion carried.
Senator Callbeck: I move:
That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be composed of the Chairman, the Deputy Chairman and the Honourable Senator Carstairs;
That the Subcommittee be empowered to make decisions on behalf of the committee with respect to its agenda, to invite witnesses and schedule hearings; and
That the Subcommittee report its decisions to the committee.
The Chairman: Is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
The Chairman: I declare the motion carried.
Senator Carstairs: Mr. Chairman, we now have to move items 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.
The Chairman: Item No. 12 is not a motion.
Senator Carstairs: I so move motions 4 though 11.
The Chairman: Is it agreed, honourable senators, to adopt motions 4 through 11.
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
