The Standing Senate Committee on National Securityand Defence met in camera this day, at 9:40 a.m. inroom 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Banks, Cordy, Day, Kenny, Meighen (6).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer, General (ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Adviser, Chief Warrant Officer (ret'd) Maurice Dessureault, Military Adviser, Deputy Commissioner (ret'd) Roy Berlinquette, SecurityAdviser.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 31, 2001, the committee proceeded to its introductory survey of the major security and defence issues facing Canada with a view to preparing a detailed work plan for future comprehensive studies. (See Issue No. 1, Monday,July 18, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESS:

From the Royal Canadian Mounted Police:

Mr. Garry Loeppky, Deputy Commissioner, Operations.

Mr. Loeppky made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:20 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.

At 10:35 a.m., the committee resumed its sitting inroom 160-S.

At 12:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Mr. Fadden made a statement and, with Mr. Giasson, answered questions.

At 1:34 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.

At 1:35 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting in room 160-S.

At 2:36 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
