The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 7:15 p.m. in Room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Carney, P.C., Comeau, Mahovlich, Meighen (5).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Inka Milewski, Vice-President, Policy;

Janice Harvey, Director, Marine Conservation Program.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, the committee continued its examination upon the matters relating to the fishing industry. (See Issue No. 1, March 20, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Ms. Milewski and Ms. Harvey made opening statements and answered questions.

It was agreed -- That the letter of July 4, 2000 from the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans listing the research undertaken by the Department (DFO) on the impact of wild and farmed stocks intermingling in British Columbia be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 3"3").

It was agreed -- That the material submitted by the Conservation Council of New Brunswick entitled "Impact of Salmon Aquaculture on the Coastal Environment: A Review" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 3"4").

It was agreed -- That the material submitted by Conservation Council of New Brunswick entitled "Annual Report 1999-2000" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 3"5").

It was agreed -- That the material submitted by the Conservation Council of New Brunswick entitled "Supplementary Brief on Salmon Aquaculture Waste/Nutrients" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 3"6").

It was agreed -- That the material submitted by the Conservation Council of New Brunswick entitled "Enforcement of Federal Environmental Legislation in Salmon Aquaculture Industry in New Brunswick" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 3"7").

It was agreed -- That the material submitted by the Conservation Council of New Brunswick entitled "Opening Remarks to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans -- October 16, 2000" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 3"8").

It was agreed -- That the material submitted by the Conservation Council of New Brunswick entitled "Aquaculture in Southwestern New Brunswick: A Question of Sustainability" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 3"9").

It was agreed -- That the material submitted by the Conservation Council of New Brunswick entitled "After the Gold Rush -- The Status and Future of Salmon Aquaculture in New Brunswick" be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 3"10").

At 8:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
