The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 7:10 p.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald J. Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Carney, P.C., Comeau, Mahovlich, Robichaud, P.C., Watt (6).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Association des pêcheurs de pétoncles des Îles:

Sylvain Vigneau.

From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans:

Yves Bastien, Commissioner for Aquaculture Development;

Jack Taylor, Executive Director, Office of the Commissioner for Aquaculture Development.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, the committee continued its examination upon the matters relating to the fishing industry. (See Issue No. 1, March 20, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.).

Mr. Vigneau made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Bastien made a statement and with Mr. Taylor answered questions.

It was agreed - That the material presented by Mr. Bud Graham, Assistant Deputy Minister, B.C. Fisheries be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 7"20").

It was agreed - That the material presented by the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 7"21").

It was agreed - That the material presented by the Association des pêcheurs de pétoncles des Îles be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 7"22").

It was agreed - That the material presented by Commissioner for Aquaculture Development be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 7"23").

At 9:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Mr. Fairbrother made a statement and with Mr. Hinson, Mr. Sweetman and Mr. Parkin answered questions.

It was agreed - That the material presented by the Aggregate Producers of Ontario be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 7"24").

It was agreed - That the material presented by the James Dick Construction Limited be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the Committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 7"25").

At 7:46 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
