The Standing Senate committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day, at 8.00 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., Chair, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, Kelleher, P.C., Mercer, Oliver and Tkachuk (8).
In attendance: Frédéric Forge and Marc Leblanc from the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 19, 2004, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1).

Robert Kuziw, President of Rangeland Beef Processors Inc.
Mr. Reykdal and Mr. Kuziw made statements and answered questions.

The Standing Senate committee on Agriculture and Forestry met in camera, this day, at 6:15 p.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gill, Gustafson, Hubley, Kelleher, P.C., Mercer, Oliver and Tkachuk (9).
Other senator present: The Honourable John Lynch-Staunton (1).
In attendance: Frédéric Forge and Marc Leblanc from the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: Mr. Hugh Lynch-Staunton, Mr. John Masswohl and Mr. Brad Wildeman from the Canadian Cattlemen's Association.
Pursuant to rule (92)(2)(e), the committee considered a future draft agenda.
It was agreed that representatives from the Canadian Cattlemen's Association participate at the meeting.
The committee discussed its upcoming trip to Washington, February 28 to March 3, 2005.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Pépin that the two draft budgets of the committee:
(a) on legislation in the following amount of:
Professional and other Services | $ 2,400 |
Transportation and Communications | 1,000 |
All other Expenditures | 1,300 |
TOTAL | $ 4,700 |
(b) on its special study on the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada in the following amount of:
Professional and other Services | $ 12,000 |
Transportation and Communications | 1,000 |
All other Expenditures | 2,000 |
TOTAL | $ 15,000 |
be adopted and that the Chair present them to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Also in attendance: Mr. Andrew Marsland and Steve Verheul from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada; Mr. Robert Carberry, Mr. Paul Haddow and Mr. Billy Hewett from Canadian Food Inspection Agency and, Mr. Bob Cairns from International Trade Canada.
Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered its future draft agenda.
It was agreed that the department's officials participate at the meeting.
The departmental officials briefed the members of the committee and answered questions on its upcoming trip to Washington (Feb 28 to March 3, 2005).
