The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 6:45 p.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Donald Oliver, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Comeau, Cools, Day, Downe, Harb, Mahovlich, Murray, P.C., Oliver and Ringuette (9).
In attendance: Guy Beaumier and Odette Madore, Research Officers, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, the committee continued its consideration of the examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2005. (For complete text of the Order of Reference, please see Issue 1 of the Proceedings of the Committee.)
APPEARING:
The Honourable John McCallum, P.C., M.P., Minister of National Revenue.
WITNESSES:
Privy Council Office:
Munir A. Sheikh, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Expenditure Review.
The Chair made a statement.
Minister McCallum made a statement and, together with Mr. Sheikh, answered questions.
At 8:52 p.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 8:53 p.m., the sitting was resumed.
The committee considered the following draft budget application for fiscal year 2004-2005 for its examination of legislation and the estimates:

| Transportation and Communication | 5,000 |
| All Other Expenditures | 500 |
| TOTAL | $ 22,400 |
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Day that the committee concur in the budget application and that the Chair be authorized to submit the said budget to the Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
It was agreed that the Steering Committee undertake to consider the feasibility of hiring special financial assistance for the committee.
At 9:13 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Day, Harb, Mercer, Murray, P.C. and Ringuette (5).
In attendance: Guy Beaumier and Odette Madore, Research Officers, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 16, 2004, the committee began its consideration of the examination of the Supplementary Estimates (A) laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2005.

Mike Joyce, Assistant Secretary, Expenditure and Management Strategies Sector;
Laura Danagher, Executive Director, Expenditure Operations & Estimates Directorate.
The Deputy Chair made a statement.
Mr. Joyce made a statement and, together with Ms. Danagher, answered questions.
