The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 6:16 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Biron, Comeau, Cools, Day, Downe, Ferretti Barth, Harb, Murray, P.C., Oliver, Ringuette, Stollery and Stratton (12).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Plamondon (1).

In attendance: Guy Beaumier and Odette Madore, Research Officers, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, the committee continued its consideration of the examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2005. (For complete text of the Order of Reference, please see Issue No. 1 of the proceedings of the committee.)

WITNESSES:

Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada:

Jennifer Stoddart, Privacy Commissioner of Canada;

Raymond D'Aoust, Assistant Privacy Commissioner.

The Chair made a statement.

Ms. Stoddart made a statement and, together with Mr. D'Aoust, answered questions.

At 7:53 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:55 p.m., the committee resumed.

The committee considered the following draft budget application for fiscal year 2005-06 for its examination of legislation and the estimates:

Professional and Other Services  $ 42,600
Transportation and Communication 10,000
All Other Expenditures          500
TOTAL $ 53,100

It was agreed that the committee concur in the budget application and that the Chair be authorized to submit the said budget to the Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.

At 8:04 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
