The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in the Peregrine room of the Radisson Hotel Winnipeg in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dyck, Hubley, Lovelace Nicholas, Peterson, Sibbeston and St. Germain, P.C. (6).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament, Tonina Simeone.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 9, 2006, the committee continued its study on the involvement of aboriginal communities and businesses in economic development activities in Canada. (See Issue No. 2, Wednesday, May 31, 2006, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Edward Kidd, Executive Director.

Manitoba Keewatinook Ininew Okimowin:

Grand Chief Sydney Garrioch;

Joe Guy Wood, Economic Development Coordinator;

Richard Hart, Executive Director;

Ashmede Asgarali, Director of Information Technology.

Manitoba Metis Federation:

Jack Park, Chair of the Economic Development;

Oliver Boulettee, Executive Director;

Donald Roulette, Executive Advisor on Strategic Development.

Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs:

Ian Cramer, Senior Business Advisor.

The Chair made opening remarks.

Ms. Sypulski made a statement and, with Mr. Kidd, answered questions.

Grand Chief Garrioch, Mr. Anderson and Mr. Wood each made a statement and, with Mr. Asgarali, answered questions.

At 10:33 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:48 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Park and Mr. Boulettee each made a statement and, with Mr. Roulette, answered questions.

Mr. Cramer made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:10 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

It was agreed to invite Mr. Wucherer to appear before the committee.

Mr. Wucherer made a statement.

At 3:45 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
