The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 7:01 p.m., this day, in room 2, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Biron, Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Mahovlich, Mercer, Peterson, Segal and St. Germain, P.C. (8).

In attendance: Marc Leblanc and Marc-André Pigeon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, the committee continued its consideration of rural poverty in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 6.)

WITNESSES:

Ontario Landowners Association:

Bill Duncan, Director;

Jacqueline Fennell, Director;

Merle Bowes, Executive;

Shawn Carmichael, Member.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Ms. Fennell, Ms. Bowes, Mr. Carmichael and Mr. Duncan each made a statement and together answered questions.

At 8:07 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:16 p.m., the committee resumed.

At 8:16 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded in camera to discuss a draft agenda.

It was agreed that the committee travel to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and Iqaluit, Nunavut Territory.

At 8:38 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Canadian Institute for Health Information:

Jennifer Zelmer, Vice President, Research and Analysis;

Elizabeth Gyorfi-Dyke, Director, Canadian Population Health Initiative.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Dr. Butler-Jones and Ms. Zelmer each made a statement and, together with Ms. DesMeules and Ms. Gyorfi-Dyke, answered questions.

At 9:44 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
