The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met in camera at 10:55 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Jerahmiel S. Grafstein, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Biron, Goldstein, Grafstein, Harb, Massicotte, Meighen, Moore and Ringuette (9).
In attendance: June Dewetering and Philippe Bergevin, Analysts, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on May 2, 2006, the committee continued its study on issues dealing with interprovincial barriers to trade. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 5)
WITNESSES:
Vegetable Oil Industry of Canada (VOIC):
Sean McPhee, President;
Bob Broeska, President, Canadian Oilseed Processors Association (COPA).
Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered a draft future agenda.
It was agreed to add more witnesses to the list for the study on hedge funds.
It was agreed that, concerning the study on interprovincial barriers to trade, the dates for travelling to Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary would be March 27, 28 and 29, 2007, but that legislation would take priority and that the trip could be postponed.
The chair informed the members as to the status of the legislation most likely to be referred to the committee. It was agreed that legislation would take priority.
It was agreed that concerning the subject of bankruptcy, members of both parties would consult with their respective caucuses before the committee take any action.
At 11:20 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 11:50 a.m., the committee resumed in public.
At 11:55 a.m., Mr. McPhee and Mr. Broeska each made a statement and answered questions.
At 12:55 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
