The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met at 4 p.m., this day, in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Jerahmiel S. Grafstein, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Campbell, Eyton, Goldstein, Grafstein, Harb, Meighen, Moore and Tkachuk (9).
In attendance: June Dewetering and Philippe Bergevin, Analysts, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June19, 2007, the committee began its study of BillC-47, respecting the protection of marks related to the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games and protection against certain misleading business associations and making a related amendment to the Trade-marks Act.

At 4:00 p.m., Mr.Carrie made a statement and, together with the other witnesses, answered questions.
At 4:35 p.m., Mr.McPherson, Mr.Ragagnin, Ms.Rowden, Ms.Northcott and Mr.Guscott each made a statement and answered questions.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Goldstein that theletter dated February6, 2007 from John A. Furlong, Chief Executive Officer of VANOC to the Minister of Industry, the Honourable Maxime Bernier as well as the document entitled "Olympic Brand Protection Enforcement Policy'' (as of February6, 2007) be appended to the proceedings of this day.
After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
At 5:10 p.m., it was agreed that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-47, respecting the protection of marks related to the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games and protection against certain misleading business associations and making a related amendment to the Trade-marks Act.
It was agreed that the title stand postponed.
