The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, to which was referred Bill C-9, to amend the Criminal Code (conditional sentence of imprisonment), met this day at 10:50 a.m. to give clause-by-clause consideration to the bill.

The Deputy Chairman: Honourable senators, the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs is here today for clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-9, to amend the Criminal Code (conditional sentence of imprisonment).

This bill seeks to amend section 742.1 of the Criminal Code to provide that a person convicted of a serious personal injury offence as defined in section 752 of the Criminal Code, a terrorism offence or a criminal organization offence prosecuted by way of indictment for which the maximum term of imprisonment is 10 years or more is not eligible for a conditional sentence.

We have now concluded our public hearings on this bill and have heard from all interested parties in relation to it. Is it agreed, honourable senators, that the committee proceed with its clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-9?
