The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day in camera, at 4:03 p.m. in room 6 of the Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Maria Chaput, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The honourable senators Champagne, P.C., Chaput, Comeau, Corbin, Jaffer, Plamondon, Robichaud, P.C., Tardif and Trenholme Counsell (9).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament: Marie-Eve Hudon.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee resumed consideration, in order to report on it from time to time, of the application of the Official Languages Act and of the regulations and directives made under it, within those institutions subject to the act. (For the complete text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 2, Monday, May 15, 2006.)
It was agreed that the staff of the senators as well as the communications officer assigned to the committee remain in the room while the committee sits in camera.
Pursuant to rule 92(2)f) the committee studied a draft report.
At 5:15 p.m., the committee suspended its proceedings.
At 5:27 p.m., the committee resumed its public hearings.

The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.
WITNESSES:
Justice Canada:
Andrée Duchesne, Senior Counseling Manager Francophonie, Justice and Official Languages and Legal Dualism;
Marc Tremblay, General Counsel and Director, Official Languages Law Group.
Mr. Toews made a statement and, assisted by Mr. Tremblay and Ms. Duchesne, answered questions.
At 6:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
