The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day in camera at 4:05 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Maria Chaput presiding.

Members of the committee present:  The Honourable senators Champagne, P.C., Chaput, Comeau, Jaffer, Losier- Cool, Plamondon, Robichaud, P.C., and Tardif (8).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Information and Research Service of the Library of Parliament, Marie-Ève Hudon.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee resumed consideration, in order to report on it from time to time, of the application of the Official Languages Act and of the regulations and directives made under it, within those institutions subject to the act. (For the complete text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 2, Monday, May 15, 2006).

It was agreed that senators' staff would remain in the room while the committee met in camera.

It was agreed that steps would be taken to ask for a permanent change of meeting room so that the committee could in future meet in the Victoria building.

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee examined a draft report.

At 4:58 p.m., proceedings were suspended.

At 5:05 p.m., public proceedings resumed.

WITNESSES:

Lise Routhier-Boudreau, Vice-President;

Diane Côté, Director, Community and Government Relations.

Monique Boudrias, Acting President;

Diana Monnet, Vice-President, Official Languages.

Canada School of Public Service:

David Waung, Vice-President, Registrar;

Sylvain Dufour, Associate Director General, Language Training Centre.

Ms. Routhier-Boudreau made a statement and along with Ms. Côté, answered questions.

At 6:00 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.

At 6:04 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting.

Mr. Baird made a statement, and, along with Ms. Boudrias, Ms. Monet and Mr. Waung, answered questions.

At 7:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
