The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 6:15 p.m. to consider draft budgets; and, in camera, to consider a draft report in respect of the current state of Canadian media industries; emerging trends and developments in these industries; the media's role, rights and responsibilities in Canadian society; and current and appropriate future policies relating thereto.

The Chairman: Honourable senators, we will deal first with three budgets. The steering committee met to consider these budgets, which you have in front of you.
The first budget, which is for $12,000, deals with legislation. It includes amounts for professional and other services, $10,000, and all other expenditures, $2,000. We are submitting this budget to members of the committee for approval.
Senator Tkachuk: I so move.
The Chairman: The motion has been seconded by Senator Johnson.
Is it agreed, honourable senators?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
The Chairman: The second budget relates to the media with respect to the study in front of us. For professional and other services, we have budgeted $15,500; transportation and communication, $1,000; and all other expenditures, $2,000. The total is $18,500. Are there any comments?
Senator Tkachuk: I so move.
The Chairman: Do you all agree?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
The Chairman: The next item is the budget for our study examining the containerized freight traffic handled by Canada's ports. The committee will be travelling to Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax and Prince Rupert. Vancouver and Prince Rupert are together. The committee has budgeted for accommodation, travel expenses, public hearings and hotel accommodation. The total of $297,194. Are there any questions or comments?

The Chairman: We will proceed now to consideration of a draft report on our current study.
