The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:37 a.m. this day, in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Oliver, Peterson, St. Germain, P.C., Sibbeston, and Zimmer (5).

In attendance: Tonina Simeone, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development:

Michael Wernick, Deputy Minister;

Terry Sewell, Director General, Implementation Branch, Claims and Indian Government;

Michel Roy, Assistant Deputy Minister, Claims and Indian Government.

Mr. Wernick, made a statement and, together with Mr. Sewell and Mr. Roy, answered questions.

At 11:04 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:07 a.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider personnel matters.

It was moved that Mr. Stephen Stewart be authorized to work with the Library of Parliament analyst to prepare a report on the committee's trip to the Four Corners.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 11:09 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
