The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 6:15 p.m. this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dallaire, Gustafson, Hubley, Lovelace Nicholas, Peterson, Sibbeston, and St. Germain, P.C. (7).

In attendance: Tonina Simeone, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Vuntut Gwitchin First Nations:

Joe Linklater, Chief.

Ta'an Kwach'an Council:

Ruth Massie, Chief.

Champagne & Aishihik First Nations:

Fran Asp, Senior Official for Intergovernmental Affairs.

Yukon Self Governing First Nations:

Albert Peter, Senior Official for Intergovernmental Affairs.

Mr. Linklater and Ms Massie each made a statement and, together with Ms Asp and Mr. Peter, answered questions.

At 8:05 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:10 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider personnel matters.

It was moved that staff be allowed to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was moved that Mr. Stephen Stewart be reimbursed for all travel and living expenses incurred with respect to the committee's trip to the Four Corners in light of authorization for Mr. Stewart to work with the Library of Parliament analyst in preparing a report on the trip.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 8:17 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
