The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 6:30 p.m. this day, in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dallaire, Dyck, Gustafson, Hubley, Lovelace Nicholas, Peterson, St. Germain, P.C. and Sibbeston (8).

In attendance: Tonina Simeone, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 27, 2008, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-30, An Act to establish the Specific Claims Tribunal and to make consequential amendments to other acts.

APPEARING:

Minister Strahl, Ms. Partel and Mr. Winogron each made a statement and answered questions.

At 7:30 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:35 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Fontaine made a statement and, together with Ms. Metallic and Mr. Sadik, answered questions.

At 8:20 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:25 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Schwartz and Mr. Atleo each made a statement and answered questions.

At 8:59 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:02 p.m., the committee resumed.

It was agreed that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-30, An Act to establish the Specific Claims Tribunal and to make consequential amendments to other acts.

With leave, it was agreed that clauses be grouped by subject heading.

It was agreed that the title stand postponed.

It was agreed that the preamble stand postponed.
