The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 7:04 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Mahovlich, Mercer, Peterson and Segal (7).

In attendance: Frédéric Forge, Mark Mahabir, Mathieu Frigon and Marc-André Pigeon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the the Senate on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, the committee continued its consideration of Bill S-228, An Act to amend the Canadian Wheat Board Act (board of directors).

WITNESS:

The Honourable Senator Grant Mitchell, sponsor of the bill.

The chair made an opening statement.

Senator Mitchell made a statement and answered questions.

At 8:00 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:05 p.m., the committee resumed and pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the committee continued its consideration of rural poverty in Canada. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded in camera to consider its draft report.

It was agreed that the committee adopt the report.

At 8:27 p.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee continued in camera to consider its draft report.

It was agreed that the draft report be adopted and that the steering committee be empowered to approve the final version of the report with any necessary editorial, grammatical or translation changes required.

At 8:44 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
