The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day, at 5:36 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Tommy Banks, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Brown, Cochrane, McCoy, Meighen, Milne, Mitchell, Sibbeston and Trenholme Counsell (10).

In attendance: Sam Banks, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 3, 2008, the committee continued its examination of Bill S-206, An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (clean drinking water). (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 7.)

WITNESSES:

As an individual:

Steve Hrudey, Professor Emeritus, University of Alberta.

Ogilvy Renault LLP:

Greg Somers, Lawyer.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Hrudey and Mr. Somers each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 6:54 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:55 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee resumed in camera for the consideration of a draft agenda.

At 7:02 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

Rob Huebert, Associate Director of the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Calgary (by videoconference).

Mr. Huebert made a presentation and answered questions.

At 9:44 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:45 a.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee resumed in camera for the consideration of a draft agenda.

At 9:48 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
