The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 9:33 a.m., in the Baffin Room of the Frobisher Inn, the chair, the Honourable Bill Rompkey, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Cochrane, Cowan, Hubley, Robichaud, P.C., and Rompkey, P.C. (6).

In attendance: Claude Emery, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament and Michael Byers, Professor, Canadian Research Chair in International Law and Politics, University of British Columbia.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, the committee continued its study on issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day in camera at 11:01 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Bill Rompkey, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Cochrane, Cook, Cowan, Robichaud, P.C., Rompkey, P.C., and Watt (7).

In attendance: Claude Emery, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, the committee continued its study on issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered a draft agenda.

It was agreed that senators' staff be authorized to remain in the room during this meeting.

After debate, it was moved:

That the committee seek the Senate's permission to:

sit while the Senate is not sitting in September 2008 for the purpose of considering the final report, and

deposit the report with the clerk.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, the committee continued its study on issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.

After debate, it was moved:

That the draft report The Coast Guard in Canada's Arctic: Interim Report be adopted as the report of the committee; and

That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be empowered to approve the final version of the report with any necessary editorial, grammatical or translation changes required and that the chair be authorized to present it to the Senate.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 1:08 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
