The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day, at 5:39 p.m., in room 160- S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Consiglio Di Nino, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Corbin, Dawson, Di Nino, Downe, Grafstein, Johnson, Mahovlich, Smith, P.C., and Stollery (9).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Segal (1).

In attendance: James Lee, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, the committee began its examination of Bill C-293, An Act respecting the provision of official development assistance abroad.

WITNESSES:

UNICEF Canada:

Nigel Fisher, President and Chief Executive Officer.

House of Commons:

Raymonde Folco, Member of Parliament.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Folco and Mr. Fisher each made a presentation and answered questions.

It was agreed, on division, that the committee proceed with clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-293 on Wednesday, April 2.

At 6:49 p. m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, the committee continued its examination of Bill C-293, An Act respecting the provision of official development assistance abroad.

International Monetary Fund:

Paul Jenkins, Senior Advisor to the Executive Director for Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Jenkins made a presentation and answered questions.

At 6:20 p.m., the Honourable Senator Corbin took the chair.

At 6:46 p. m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
