Issue 8 - Evidence - June 17, 2009
OTTAWA, Wednesday, June 17, 2009
The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence, to which was referred Bill C-33, An Act to amend the War Veterans Allowance Act, met this day at 12:57 p.m. to give consideration to the bill.
Senator Colin Kenny (Chair) in the chair.
The Chair: I call to order the meeting of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence for the purposes of approving a report from the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs. I would like to recognize Senator Meighen.
Senator Meighen: Mr. Chair, the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence has the honour to present its first report. Your subcommittee, to which was referred on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, the study on Bill C-33, An Act to amend the War Veterans Allowance Act, has examined the said bill and now reports the same without amendment.
The Chair: Colleagues, we have a motion before us. Comments? Those in favour? Those opposed? Abstentions? Carried.
Senator Meighen: Are we to instruct the chair to report the bill?
The Chair: I am happy with you reporting it, Senator Meighen. You dealt with the bill in your meetings.
If Senator Meighen is free and available, then with the agreement of committee members, I recommend that he report the bill to the Senate at the earliest opportunity.
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
Senator Banks: I have a technical question. Since the bill has been reported by the chair to the committee, is it okay for — my question has been answered. Thank you.
Senator Meighen: The clerk nodded in the affirmative, did she?
The Chair: Yes.
Shaila Anwar, Clerk of the Committee: The rule refers to the chair or another senator designated by the chair.
The Chair: Are we happy?
Senator Day: I never did hear the question, but the answer was great.
The Chair: Does anyone else have any other business? That being the case, we stand adjourned.
(The committee adjourned.)
