The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 6:10 p.m., in room 505, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Bill Rompkey, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Cochrane, Cook, Hubley, Manning, Robichaud, P.C., Rompkey, P.C., and Watt (8).
In attendance: Claude Emery, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 12, 2009, the committee continued to examine the issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Fisheries and Oceans Canada:
Mimi Breton, Assistant Deputy Minister, Oceans and Habitat Sector;
Sylvain Paradis, Director General, Ecosystem Science Sector;
Michelle Wheatley, Regional Director, Science, Central and Arctic Region.
Ms. Breton made a statement and, together with Mr. Paradis and Ms. Wheatley, answered questions.
At 7:35 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Cochrane, Cook, Hubley, MacDonald, Manning, Robichaud, P.C., Rompkey, P.C., and Watt (9).

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 12, 2009, the committee continued to examine the issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)
Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.
It was agreed that the draft report entitled Crisis in the Lobster Fishery be adopted; that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be authorized to approve the final version of the report taking into account the changes discussed today; and, that a motion for the adoption of the report at the Senate be proposed with a request for a complete and detailed government response to the report.
At 11:30 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
