The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence has the honour to table its
FIRST REPORT
Your committee, which was authorized by the Senate to incur expenses for the purpose of its examination and consideration of such matters as were referred to it, reports, pursuant to rule 104, that the expenses incurred for that purpose during the Second Session of the Fortieth Parliament are as follows:
1. With respect to its studies of legislation:
Professional and Other Services $ 753 Transport and Communications — Other Expenditures — Witness Expenses — Total $ 753
During the session your committee, together with its subcommittee, spent 5.9 hours meeting 13 witnesses, and examined and reported on two bills: Bill C-33, An Act to amend the War Veterans Allowance Act; the study of which was delegated to the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs; and Bill S-2, An Act to amend the Customs Act.
2. With respect to its special study on the national security policy for Canada (authorized by the Senate on Thursday March 5, 2009):
Professional and Other Services $ 101,083 Transport and Communications: 128,548 Other Expenditures 3,434 Witness Expenses 1,213 Total $ 234,278
During this study, your committee spent 48.6 hours meeting 20 persons during public hearings held in Ottawa. In addition to hearings in Ottawa, your committee also spent 161 hours meeting 697 persons while on fact-finding missions to military bases in Ontario and the Maritimes and to land, sea and airport border crossings in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
During the past session your committee also considered a draft report.
3. With respect to its special study on the services and benefits provided to veterans and their families (authorized by the Senate on April 29, 2009):
Professional and Other Services — Transport and Communications — Other Expenditures — Witness Expenses 1,577 Total $ 1,577
This order of reference was delegated to the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. During this study the subcommittee spent 15.8 hours hearing from 26 witnesses during public hearings held in Ottawa.
In addition to the expenses for the examination of legislation and for its special studies as set out above, your committee also incurred general postal charges in the amount of $38.
