The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8:05 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Buth, Mahovlich, Maltais, Merchant, Mockler, Nolin, Peterson, Plett, Rivard and Robichaud, P.C. (10).
In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of research and innovation efforts in the agricultural sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue no. 1.)
WITNESSES:
University of Saskatchewan:
Richard S. Gray, Professor, Bioresource Policy, Business and Economics.
University of Guelph:
John Cranfield, Professor, Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (by videoc onference).
Conference Board of Canada:
Len Coad, Director, Energy, Environment and Technology Policy.
Mr. Gray and Mr. Cranfield each made opening statements and, together, answered questions.
At 9:11 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 9:16 a.m., the committee resumed.
Mr. Coad made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 9:48 a.m., the Honourable Senator Peterson replaced the Honourable Senator Callbeck as a member of the committee.
Tribute was paid to the Honourable Senator Peterson, who will retire from the Senate on October 19, 2012.
At 10:05 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
