The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day in camera, at 9:35 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Campbell, Demers, Lovelace Nicholas, Meredith, Patterson, Raine and St. Germain, P.C. (8).

In attendance: Tonina Simeone and James Gauthier, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. In accordance with rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.

It was moved that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was agreed that the report be adopted in principle with further consideration of requested changes to take place at the next meeting of the committee.

It was agreed that the chair and deputy chair be empowered to approve the final text of the report with any grammatical, editorial, formatting, and other such changes required.

It was agreed that the steering committee have the authority to decide when the report will be tabled.

At 11:20 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
