The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 9:30 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Vernon White, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Beyak, Dyck, Meredith, Munson, Patterson, Raine, Seth, Sibbeston and White (10).

In attendance: Shauna Troniak and Wren Nasr, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. WITNESSES:

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada:

Natalie Neville, Director, Quebec-Atlantic Team, Implementation Branch, Treaties and Aboriginal Government;

Kimberly Thompson, Director, Nunavut-Northwest Territories Team, Implementation Branch, Treaties and Aboriginal Government;

Janice Traynor, Senior Environmental Policy Analyst.

Ms. Thompson made a statement and, together with Ms. Neville, answered questions.

At 10:23 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:30 a.m., the committee resumed in camera and, pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.

At 10:40 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
