The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 6:45 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Vernon White, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Demers, Dyck, Meredith, Raine, Seth, Sibbeston and White (8).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Moore and Tkachuk (2).
In attendance: Shauna Troniak and Wren Nasr, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, the committee continued its consideration on the evolving legal and political recognition of the collective identity and rights of the Métis in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 14.)
WITNESSES:

The Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., former senator;
Jean Barman, Professor Emeritus.
The Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., and Ms. Barman each made a statement and answered questions.
At 7:59 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 8:18 p.m., the committee resumed in camera, and, pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), considered a draft report.
It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.
It was agreed that the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., be permitted to remain during the in camera portion of the meeting.
At 9 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
