The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:46 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Braley, Champagne, P.C., Cordy, Demers, Eggleton, P.C., Hubley, Martin, Merchant, Ogilvie, Seidman and Verner, P.C. (11).

In attendance: Karin Phillips and Michel-Ange Pantal, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 23, 2011, the committee continued its study on the progress in implementing the 2004 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 3.)

WITNESSES:

Congress of Aboriginal Peoples:

Betty Ann Lavallée, National Chief;

Barbara Van Haute, Director of Population Health.

Health Canada:

Valerie Gideon, Director General, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch.

Assembly of First Nations:

Jonathan Thompson, Director, Health and Social Secretariat.

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami:

Elizabeth Ford, Director, Health and Social Development;

Udloriak Hanson, Special Advisor to the President.

Native Women's Association of Canada:

Erin Corston, Director of Health.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Lavalée, Ms. Gideon and Mr. Thompson each made a statement and, together with Ms. Van Haute, answered questions.

At 11:44 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:48 a.m., the committee resumed and the deputy chair, the Honourable Senator Eggleton, P.C., took the chair.

Ms. Hanson and Ms. Corston each made a statement and, together with Ms. Ford, answered questions.

At 12:48 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
