The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day, at 10:32 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Dawson, Demers, Downe, Fortin-Duplessis, Housakos, Johnson, Oh, Robichaud, P.C., Smith, P.C. (Cobourg) and Verner, P.C. (12).

In attendance: Natalie Mychajlyszyn and Brian Hermon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 21, 2013, the committee continued its study on security conditions and economic developments in the Asia-Pacific region, the implications for Canadian policy and interests in the region, and other related matters. (For the complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

Amnesty International Canada:

Alex Neve, Secretary General.

As an individual:

Pierre Lortie, Senior Business Advisor, Dentons Canada.

Canadian Council of Chief Executives:

Ailish Campbell, Vice President, Policy, International and Fiscal Issues.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Neve made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:44 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:46 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Lortie and Ms. Campbell each made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:36 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
