The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:40 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Glen Patterson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Dyck, Meredith, Moore, Ngo, Patterson, Raine, Tannas, Wallace and Watt (10).

In attendance: Julie Cool and Martha Butler, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 10, 2014, the committee began its consideration of the subject matter of Bill C-33, An Act to establish a framework to enable First Nations control of elementary and secondary education and to provide for related funding and to make related amendments to the Indian Act and consequential amendments to other Acts.

WITNESS:

University of Regina:

Larry Steeves, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education.

Mr. Steeves made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:45 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:50 a.m., the committee resumed in camera.

Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee considered a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room during in camera portions of the meeting.

At 11:14 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
