The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:33 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Glen Patterson, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Dyck, Lovelace Nicholas, Meredith, Moore, Ngo, Patterson, Raine, Tannas and Wallace (10).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Watt (1).
In attendance: Norah Kielland and Martha Butler, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-25, An Act respecting the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation Band Order.
WITNESSES:
Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada:
Andrew Saranchuk, Assistant Deputy Minister, Resolution and Individual Affairs Sector.
Department of Justice Canada:
Martin Reiher, Acting General Counsel and Director, Operations and Programs, Legal Services.
Federation of Newfoundland Indians:
Stephen May, Legal Counsel (by videoconference).
Mr. Saranchuk made a statement and, together with Mr. Reiher, answered questions.
It was agreed to distribute the English-only speaking notes provided by the Federation of Newfoundland Indians.
At 10:39 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 10:45 a.m., the committee resumed.
Mr. May made a statement and answered questions.
At 11:33 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
