The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:19 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Cordy, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Nancy Ruth, Ogilvie, Patterson, Seidman, Seth and Stewart Olsen (11).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, the committee began its study on Bill S-211, An Act to establish a national day to promote health and fitness for all Canadians.

WITNESS:

The Honourable Senator Nancy Greene Raine, sponsor of the bill.

The chair made a statement.

The Honourable Senator Raine made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:42 p.m., it was agreed that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill S-211, An Act to establish a national day to promote health and fitness for all Canadians.

It was agreed that the title stand postponed.

It was agreed that the preamble stand postponed.

It was agreed that clause 1, which contains the short title, stand postponed.

It was agreed that clause 2 carry.

It was agreed that clause 3 carry.

It was agreed that clause 1 carry.

It was agreed that the preamble carry.

It was agreed that the title carry.

It was agreed that the bill, carry.

It was agreed that the chair report Bill S-211 to the Senate.

At 4:43 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:03 p.m., the Honourable Senator Patterson replaced the Honourable Senator Enverga as a member of the committee.

At 5:14 p.m., the committee resumed and, pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, began its study of Bill S-5, an Act to amend the Canada National Parks Act (Nááts'ihch'oh National Park Reserve of Canada).

WITNESS:

Government of the Northwest Territories:

Peter Vician, Deputy Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment (by video conference).

Mr. Vician made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:16 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
