The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day at 11:34 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Jim Munson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Cordy, Hubley, Martin, Munson, Nancy Ruth and Ngo (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Omidvar (1).

In attendance: Julia Nicol and Jean-Philippe Duguay, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 14, 2016, the committee continued its study on steps being taken to facilitate the integration of newly-arrived Syrian refugees and to address the challenges they are facing, including by the various levels of government, private sponsors and non-governmental organizations.

APPEARING:

The Honourable John McCallum, P.C., M.P., Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

WITNESSES:

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada:

David Manicom, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic and Program Policy Sector;

Dawn Edlund, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations;

Corinne Prince St-Amand, Director General, Integration and Foreign Credentials Recognition Office.

United Nations High Commissioner to Refugees:

Michael Casasola, Resettlement Officer.

The chair made a statement.

The Minister made a statement and, together with Messrs. Manicom, Edlund and Ms. Prince St-Amand, answered questions.

At 12:40 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:46 p.m., the committee resumed.

At 12:46 p.m., the committee considered a draft agenda (future business).

Mr. Casasola made a statement and answered questions.

At 1:31 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
