THE STANDING COMMITTEE ON RULES, PROCEDURES AND THE RIGHTS OF PARLIAMENT

EVIDENCE

OTTAWA, Tuesday, February 6, 2018

The Standing Committee on Rules, Procedures and the Rights of Parliament met this day at 10:03 a.m. for the election of a deputy chair; and, in camera, for the consideration of a draft agenda (future business).

Senator Leo Housakos (Chair) in the chair.

[English]

The Chair: Good morning, colleagues. I would like to call the meeting to order and start off by welcoming a few of the senators that are pinch hitting today. I see Senator Maltais, Senator Unger and Senator Munson. He says if he likes the committee a lot he might be coerced to stay on long term.

Colleagues, as you are all aware, Senator Fraser stepped down and left us last week. There’s a vacancy in the position of deputy chair. As in the agreement in November by all parties, this committee will have a chair and deputy chair.

Could I have nominations to replace Senator Fraser?

Senator Seidman: I would like to nominate Senator Serge Joyal.

The Chair: Are there any other nominations?

I also welcome Senator Duffy, who is also replacing a senator here today.

If there are no other nominations, it is moved by Senator Seidman that Senator Joyal be the deputy chair of this committee.

Is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Thank you, colleagues.

That’s the public portion of the meeting, and now we will move in camera.

(The committee continued in camera.)
