THE COMMITTEE OF SELECTION

EVIDENCE

OTTAWA, Tuesday, February 16, 2016

The Committee of Selection met this day at 5 p.m. pursuant to the order of the Senate respecting creation of the Special Committee on Senate Modernization.

Senator Elizabeth (Beth) Marshall (Chair) in the chair.

The Chair: We have more than quorum, so I call the meeting of the Selection Committee to order.

As you probably know, the purpose of the meeting today is to nominate senators to the Special Committee on Senate Modernization. That stems from Senator Cowan's motion in December to establish the special committee, and it was adopted by the Senate on December 11 of last year.

By order of the Senate, there will be 15 senators on this committee. I'm going to open up the floor for nominations.

Senator Plett: Chair, I would like to nominate Senators Bellemare, Cools, Frum, Greene, Johnson, McInnis, McIntyre, Stewart Olsen, Tannas and Wells.

The Chair: That's 10.

Are there any further nominations?

Senator Munson: Yes, chair. I'd like to nominate these members to the Special Committee on Senate Modernization: Eggleton, Joyal, Massicotte, McCoy and Tardif.

The Chair: Who was the last one?

Senator Munson: Claudette Tardif.

The Chair: So we now have our 15 nominations. I have Senators Bellemare, Cools, Frum, Greene, Johnson, McInnis, McIntyre, Stewart Olsen, Tannas, Wells, Eggleton, Joyal, Massicotte, McCoy and Tardif. The first 10 were nominated by Senator Plett and the subsequent 5 by Senator Munson.

Are members in agreement that these will be the senators we put forward to the Senate?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Agreed. Thank you.

Is it agreed that I report the membership of the special committee that this committee is recommending to the Senate at the next sitting of the Senate?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chair: Agreed.

(The committee adjourned.)
