The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 5:35 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Champagne, P.C., Duffy, Eaton, Mahovlich, Maltais, Mercer, Merchant, Mockler, Plett, Rivard and Robichaud, P.C. (11).

In attendance: Sarah Jane Fraser, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of research and innovation efforts in the agricultural sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Carleton University:

Maria Derosa, Associate Professor, Chemistry.

University of Montreal:

Dr. Bruce Murphy, Professor and Director, Center for Animal Reproduction Research, Department of Veterinary Biomedicine.

Agricultural Institute of Canada:

Lianne Dwyer, Vice President.

Ms. DeRosa, Dr. Murphy and Ms. Dwyer each made opening statements and answered questions.

At 7:20 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:23 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda.

At 7:26 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
