The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 5:48 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Fernand Robichaud, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Buth, Eaton, Mahovlich, Maltais, Mercer, Merchant, Plett, Rivard and Robichaud, P.C. (9).

In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of research and innovation efforts in the agricultural sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Food Secure Canada:

Anna Paskal, Senior Policy Advisor;

Diana Bronson, Executive Director.

Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute:

David McInnes, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Canadian Federation of Agriculture:

Garnet Etsell, Co-Chair National Food Strategy.

Ms. Bronson, Mr. McInnes and Mr. Etsell each made opening statements and, together with Ms. Paskal, answered questions.

At 7:38 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
