The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8:03 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Braley, Buth, Mahovlich, Maltais, Mercer, Mockler, Plett, Robichaud, P.C., and White (9).

In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of research and innovation efforts in the agricultural sector. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

University of British Columbia:

Ed Levy, Adjunct Professor, Intellectual Property and Policy Research Group;

Emily Marden, Research Associate and Lecturer, Intellectual Property and Policy Research Group.

BIOTECanada:

Andrew Casey, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Agrisoma Biosciences Inc.:

Steven Fabijanski, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Turkey Farmers of Canada:

Mark Davies, Chair;

Phil Boyd, Executive Director.

Mr. Casey, Mr. Fabijanski, Ms. Marden and Mr. Levy each made opening statements and answered questions.

At 9:11 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:16 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Davies made an opening statement and, together with Mr. Boyd, answered questions.

At 9:56 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:58 a.m., pursuant to rule 12-16 (1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda.

It was agreed that the committee hear from department officials at its meeting on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, should the motion for the study of the subject-matter of Bill C-45 be adopted by the Senate later this day.

At 10:17 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
