The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day at 10:30 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Cordy, Downe, Eaton, Fortin-Duplessis, Oh and Smith, P.C. (Cobourg) (8).

In attendance: Blair Armitage, Principal Clerk, Committees; James Lee, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 21, 2013, the committee continued its study to examine such issues as may arise from time to time relating to foreign relations and international trade generally. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 10.)

The committee examined the impact of Nigeria's recent election and the ongoing threat of Boko Haram.

WITNESSES:

Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada:

Ken Neufeld, Director General, West and Central Africa Bureau;

James Stone, Deputy Director, West Africa;

Peter Bundy, Senior Desk Officer, West and Central Africa Bilateral Relations Division.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Neufeld made a statement and, together with Mr. Stone, answered questions.

At 11:32 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:35 a.m., the committee resumed in camera for consideration of a draft agenda (future business), pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d).

At 11:52 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
