The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 5:25 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Dagenais, Eaton, Maltais, Mercer, Mockler, Ogilvie, Oh, Rivard, Robichaud, P.C., and Tardif (11).

In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 21, 2013, the committee continued its consideration of the importance of bees and bee health in the production of honey, food and seed in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

University of Manitoba:

Rob Currie, PhD, Professor and Head, Department of Entomology.

University of Guelph:

Ernesto Guzman, PhD, Professor and Head of the Honey Bee Research Centre (by video conference).

University of Montreal:

Dr. Pascal Dubreuil, Assistant Dean, Clinical and Professional Affairs.

Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists:

Medhat Nasr, PhD, President.

BC Bee Breeders Association:

Barry Denluck, President.

Mr. Currie, Mr. Guzman and Dr. Dubreuil each made opening statements and, together, answered questions.

At 6:38 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:42 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Nasr and Mr. Denluck each made opening statements and, together, answered questions.

At 7:26 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
